Phosphates are essential nutrients for all plants and indispensable for the energy metabolism of every living cell. They enter aquarium water through food and the decomposition of organic matter. However, an uncontrolled increase in phosphate levels causes problems, such as excessive algae growth. Additionally, in saltwater aquariums, phosphates can severely impede the excretion of calcium carbonate, necessary for the formation of the calcareous skeleton of stony corals, thus hindering their growth. Conversely, in aquariums with a high density of plants or corals and a low fish population, phosphate can become a deficient element that must be added.

For freshwater aquariums, a phosphate level of up to 0.4 mg/l is appropriate, and should not exceed 1 mg/l. A concentration of 0.02 mg/l is considered sufficient for the nutrient supply of aquatic plants. In natural seawater, the phosphate content is around 0.06 mg/l. However, this value is significantly lower in coral reefs, where concentrations range between 0.01 and 0.02 mg/l. Corresponding values should be aimed for in saltwater aquariums, depending on the specific inhabitants. The phosphate concentration of the aquarium water should therefore be checked regularly.
