Phosphates are essential nutrients for all plants and indispensable for the energy metabolism of every living cell. They enter aquarium water through food and the decomposition of organic matter. However, an uncontrolled increase in phosphate levels causes problems, such as excessive algae growth. Additionally, in saltwater aquariums, phosphates can severely impede the excretion of calcium carbonate, necessary for the formation of the calcareous skeleton of stony corals, thus hindering their growth. Conversely, in aquariums with a high density of plants or corals and a low fish population, phosphate can become a deficient element that must be added. In some reef aquariums, extremely nutrient-poor conditions are deliberately created – in these cases, phosphate deficiencies can occur.

For freshwater aquariums, a phosphate level of up to 0.4 mg/l is appropriate, but should not exceed 1 mg/l. A concentration of 0.02 mg/l is considered sufficient for the nutrient supply of aquatic plants. In natural seawater, the phosphate content is around 0.06 mg/l. However, this value is significantly lower in coral reefs, where concentrations range between 0.01 and 0.02 mg/l.

We recommend that the phosphate concentration in saltwater aquariums generally not exceed 0.1 mg/l, and specifically between 0.01 and 0.05 mg/l in reef aquariums. In any case, the phosphate concentration of the aquarium water should be checked regularly.
